SID FRANK
Sid Frank is a Montreal-based sound artist who composes minimalist electronic drones that incorporate sounds culled from his archive of field recordings, radio broadcasts and vinyl.
While travelling in India in his twenties, Sid developed a love for the drones produced by stringed and reed instruments that provide the foundation for Indian classical music. His appreciation of drones from around the world deepened in subsequent years when he lived and worked in Asia, pursuing a career outside of music.
Sid began experimenting with electronic instruments and software a decade ago. Since then, he has explored the use of drones to provide a backdrop that helps reveal the musicality of sounds that might normally be considered harsh or distracting. He aims to create space for the attentive listener to perceive phantom sounds and generate their own internal compositions. He hopes they will feel both the disorientation and the tranquility he has experienced when discovering new sound environments.
During a tour in China and Japan in November and December 2023, Sid presented Beijing 1988, a work that combined live performance with a video of street life he recorded in Beijing over three decades ago. An audio recording of the work was selected by Bandcamp as one of the Best Field Recordings of 2024.
His most recently recording, Ji, was released by Test Tone Music in April 2025. He has also self-released three albums on Bandcamp: Five Seconds from Gaza in 2021; Saint-Zotique in 2020; and Streets, Subways and the Radio in 2019.
