STANDARD GREY : Box /Gate

'It’s a square metal box roughly 20 x 20 cm outfitted with stereo contact mics that run into my trusty Zoom H6. The Zoom’s line out is set at at maximum volume to an old Sony tape recorder. There’s a second tape machine with a beat up condenser mic, and both run at different speeds.
The strategy here is simple: hit record and leave the box out on my balcony to let nature do its thing on heavy rain days.
I was pleased with the results: Long stretches of overdriven, percussive textures that come and go in clusters, all with a strangely dynamic swing to them. Side A is made up of layers of these takes.
For side B, the mixes were dumped to tape and run through selected fx pedals, including a very handsome dirty gate pedal made by my buddy and occasional collaborator Mark aka aka Rural Noise aka Janza Slope.
