母(MAMA) : Music for Your Mouth (Brushing Your Teeth)

'This is an improvised (noise) performance created by Gifu-based ambient musician mama, who sought to bring ambient music into the space of the oral cavity. This work serves as a record of that performance, compiled into a cassette recording, a simple A3-sized photo booklet (with text), and an original toothbrush.

When brushing my teeth, large sounds̶vibrations̶are generated inside my mouth. From the outside, it sounds like a simple shaka-shaka, but inside it is more like a roar, a crackle, a fizz, a buzz. Rather than hearing with the eardrum, it often feels as if I am perceiving vibration itself, to the point that onomatopoeia alone seems insufficient. In fact, these kinds of noises exist inside the mouth during the act of brushing. This work is a record of an improvisation with those sounds resonating within me as I brush my teeth. Quite literally, while brushing, in the midst of it, listening to sounds that only I can hear, I manipulate the equipment I usually use for live performances of what is called noise music, and the result becomes the piece. Recently, I have often been performing in this way. Right now, I am writing this while performing alone. I can feel the noise resonating inside my mouth and the noise I am producing externally interacting and amplifying each other within me. Because I am holding a toothbrush, I only have one hand left to operate the equipment, but this limitation fosters creativity in improvisation. The reason I do this is that, during improvisation̶especially when performing in front of others̶I wanted to
perform while listening to a different resonance than the one heard by those others. I also wanted to pose a question to the audience: what kind of sound am I hearing, and what kind of relationship emerges between that and the noise improvisation actually coming out of the speakers? I describe this as “imagining another person’ s hearing.”・・・(mama)'
