Katsura Mouri

Katsura Mouri

Katsura Mouri is an experimental turntablist/sound artist based in Kyoto since 1998.
She was a member of a turntablist unit active until 2009, creating sounds and experimental improvisations using not only records but also cymbals and other devices.
After the unit disbanded, the main sound source changed from a Technics SL-1200 turntable to a portable record player. Treating the record player like an instrument, particularly using the amplified hum noise generated by the player’s motor, Katsura Mouri offers exciting high intensity sound art performances linking light and hum noise.
In 2020, with the aim of creating her very own individual sounds, she made turntables out of plaster. Using the sound produced by 10 such turntables set up and playing simultaneously in the forest, she added field recordings and images in order to create a very energetic three-dimensional performance.
On top of her turntablist/sound artist activities, Katsura Mouri is also the manager of Parallax Records in Kyoto.
