'Basic Function has launched a new mixtape line, bMx Tapes. The first release is Across The Block Party by Okinawa-based DJ PIN. Of all the hip-hop DJs in existence, who fits the word 'experiment' better than PIN?
There is an Okinawan word 'gachimaya', which has a similar meaning to the Japanese word 'kuishinbo' (foodie), and PIN is the kind of 'sound gachimaya' who will taste anything that strikes his fancy, even if it looks like something he could eat off the street. The style of PIN is a sublimation of the techniques of battle-oriented turntablists, and it jumps freely from beats to free-music, ragga to abstract, and even reminds us of the electronic music and music concretes of the 60s and 70s.
The label owner had the opportunity to listen to Toshi Ichiyanagi's "Tokyo 1969" recently, and although PIN's mix was a one-shot recording, there is something about it that connects to the tape collages made by cutting and pasting open-reel tapes in that era.
To tell the truth, I don't even care about that preamble. It's just a great headbanging mix, so I want everyone to listen to it!
